His name is Amaury Guichon, and the title “the wizard of chocolate” suits him perfectly. The French-Swiss pastry chef and chocolatier is famous for his chocolate sculptures, which he frequently shares on social media. Over time he has produced fantastical pieces you’d hardly believe are edible. Animals, plants, fruit, cartoon heroes, mythical beasts, utilitarian objects – even cars, motorbikes, bicycles, and trains at large scale – have rolled out of his pastry workshop, some on commission and others born from his own urge to express himself and test his limits.

It’s worth following his Instagram account @amauryguichon and keeping a close eye on his work. Among his most recent creations you’ll find a full-size BMX bicycle made entirely of chocolate! And also the chocolate rendition of one of the most iconic models of high watchmaking out there.

In the past Amaury crafted a pocket watch. This time, wishing to honor his Swiss roots, he chose to take on a watch that made history with its unconventional mechanism, which rotates around the dial to indicate the time: the famed Freak One by Ulysse Nardin, a model that was even distinguished at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2023 with the Iconic Watch prize.

The precision in the design of every single part of the watch is astonishing. What’s more, the movement’s elements – the central bridge, the escapement system, and the gear train – all move and rotate just as they do in the real watch! We don’t know whether this creation ultimately ended up with a client of Guichon’s, yet I can’t imagine how anyone would dare to destroy such a masterpiece in order to eat it. I certainly couldn’t…
