GRAND SEIKO Spring Drive U.F.A. – A Revolution in Precision, Wrapped in Subtlety

Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A.
Grand Seiko’s big news at Watches & Wonders 2025 wasn’t about over-the-top complexity or extravagant luxury. It was about substance — the brand-new Spring Drive U.F.A. movement, delivering an unprecedented accuracy of ±20 seconds per year.

At first glance, the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A.,
doesn’t exactly shout “world record.” Aside from the tiny “U.F.A.” inscription at the bottom of the dial, there’s nothing obvious to prepare you for what this watch represents. Like all Grand Seiko creations, it’s visually refined — and equally understated.
When I first saw it in Geneva, at the Japanese brand’s booth at Watches & Wonders, I was immediately drawn to its exquisitely textured dial. But the true surprise came during the presentation, thanks to the warm and knowledgeable Japanese representative: this new member of the Evolution 9 collection houses the most accurate mainspring-powered watch movement in the world. At least, that’s what Grand Seiko’s own internal research shows. Just like that, the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2 made its debut in watchmaking history — without fireworks or fanfare, but with the quiet confidence and precision we’ve come to expect from Grand Seiko.

A New Benchmark in Accuracy

The new movement delivers a stunning annual accuracy of ±20 seconds — that’s a deviation of just 20 seconds out of the roughly 31 million seconds in a year! To put it another way, it’s equivalent to ±3 seconds per month, a rate normally associated with the daily deviation of conventional mechanical watches.
It’s worth remembering here what sets Spring Drive apart. Unlike traditional escapement systems, Spring Drive uses a glide wheel controlled and slowed by a quartz oscillator and an integrated circuit. In other words, it’s a hybrid technology: a quartz-regulated movement powered purely by mechanical energy from a mainspring and the motion of the wrist.

In this particular case, the movement relies on a specially aged quartz oscillator and a newly designed integrated circuit — the critical brain that regulates the movement’s speed with remarkable precision. Both components are vacuum-sealed to shield them from external disruptions like temperature changes or static electricity. And for the first time ever in a Spring Drive movement, a regulation switch allows the watch to be fine-tuned for accuracy during after-sales servicing.

A Bit of History

Grand Seiko’s obsession with precision dates back to its very first watch, created in 1960. Less than a decade later, in 1969, the brand introduced the mechanical V.F.A. — standing for “Very Fine Adjusted” — a designation given to Grand Seiko models adjusted so perfectly they achieved a phenomenal accuracy of ±1 minute per month.
By the late 1970s, development began on Spring Drive, an ambitious concept aiming to fuse the traditional mechanical power of a mainspring with the modern precision of electronic watchmaking.

Ιn 2004 — a year when Greece celebrated the return of the Olympic Games to Athens — Grand Seiko unveiled the Spring Drive Caliber 9R65. It featured automatic winding, a 72-hour power reserve, and astonishing monthly accuracy of ±15 seconds, setting a new benchmark for spring-powered movements.
Today, all that expertise has culminated in the revolutionary Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, — now marked with the initials U.F.A., standing for “Ultra Fine Accuracy.”

The Watches

What makes this new movement even more impressive is how compact and refined it is — small enough to fit inside the latest 37mm Grand Seiko cases. These are now the smallest watches ever to house a 9R-series movement.

In Watches & Wonders, two elegant 37mm models made their debut: the SLGB003 in High-Intensity Titanium and the SLGB001, a boutique-exclusive platinum version limited to just 80 pieces.

Their dials are rendered in soft, icy blue tones — slightly lighter in the titanium version and a touch deeper in the platinum model. Both are inspired by the frost-covered trees of the Kirigamine Highlands, east of the Shinshu Watch Studio, where all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are made.

Through the exhibition caseback, made of sapphire crystal, you can admire the beautifully finished movement: razor-sharp, mirror-polished edges that sparkle like ice, and ruby jewels that glow like stars in the winter night sky above Shinshu. As you can see, poetry is everywhere in a Grand Seiko creation.

Beyond the visual beauty, there’s also a strong focus on practicality. The titanium version comes with a matching titanium bracelet, equipped — for the first time — with a brand-new three-step micro-adjust clasp. It allows tool-free adjustments in precise 2mm increments. The platinum version, on the other hand, is paired with an elegant, classic crocodile leather strap.

Τhe price of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A. SLGB003 in titanium is €12,000, while the limited-edition Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A. SLBG001 in platinum is priced at €42,000.
