Hublot has just unveiled the first watch in the world made from multicolored ceramic. When I first saw the Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic, it reminded me of the polka-dot works of the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. That’s because its dark grey ceramic bezel is speckled with blue circular patterns that resemble polka dots. However, the blue circles appear to be placed in an organically random way, just like a piece of modern abstract or pop art. The flawless and virtually invisible blending of colors and shapes is truly impressive.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic adds another milestone to the Swiss brand’s reputation for pioneering materials, especially in high-tech ceramics. Hublot already has watches in its arsenal made from colored sapphire crystal cases, King Gold – the world’s first scratch-resistant gold alloy – and has been successfully experimenting with ceramics in various hues for at least a decade. It is also the only watchmaker that produces in–house ceramics in such a wide range of bold colors, like red, green, orange, or yellow.

Ceramic like that of the Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic has never been seen before. Sure, there are two-tone ceramic bezels on Rolex GMT Master IIs, and in early 2024, Audemars Piguet announced its own take on multicolored ceramic in a camouflage pattern—but did not release a complete watch. So, this is the first time we see a timepiece with ceramic elements in various shades forming actual design motifs. The result is so flawless and “magical” that Hublot has coined the term “Magic Ceramic.”

Naturally, as it awaits patent approval, Hublot is keeping the exact process of achieving this magical ceramic patterning under wraps. What they did reveal to us journalists is the following:
“More than just a simple layering of pigments, achieving multi-coloured ceramic requires innovative thinking and a deep understanding of ceramics and how colours are reproduced. While others have attempted to create multicoloured ceramics, none have come close to what Hublot has achieved. Each pigment used for colour must go through different temperatures during the baking and moulding processes of the ceramic components. The challenge therefore lies in finding the perfect balance to obtain a homogeneous and flawless result – time and time again. Always leading and never following, Hublot’s new “Magic Ceramic” is born of a pending patent process and is making its debut in the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic, a limited edition of just 20 pieces that offers a glimpse of one of the countless possibilities that this innovation offers.”

Aside from that, the Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is a classic Big Bang Unico model, with a 42mm black ceramic case featuring a combination of sandblasted and polished surfaces and water resistance of up to 100 meters. The signature skeleton aesthetic of the Unico line is present here as well: chronograph subdials, a date display with the full disc of numbers from 1 to 31 visible, oversized numerals and hour markers, and large hands all showcase the mechanical intricacy of the automatic movement.
Inside beats the HUB1280 Unico Caliber, manufactured in-house by Hublot, consisting of 354 components, 43 jewels, operating at 4Hz, and delivering a 72-hour power reserve. It also includes a vertical clutch, column wheel, and flyback function, all of which can be admired through the watch’s transparent caseback.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic comes on a rubber strap, like all watches in the Big Bang collection. As mentioned earlier, it is a limited edition of only 20 individually numbered pieces—so consider it already sold out. Η προτεινόμενη τιμή του πλησιάζει τις 35.000.
