Omega’s decision to dress the dials of its two new chronographs – the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite – in meteorite is nothing short of brilliant. If any watchmaker has the right or privilege to use a material that has traveled to Earth from outer space, it’s undoubtedly Omega. The brand’s historic connection to space exploration is well known, particularly the story of the Speedmaster Moonwatch – the first watch to land on the Moon alongside humankind in 1969.

What is a meteorite?
Meteorite is a rare natural material that originates from an asteroid that exploded millions of years ago in deep space. As fragments of this extraterrestrial material – primarily composed of iron and nickel – wander through the vastness of the cosmos, they cool by just a few degrees Celsius every several million years. This slow cooling results in the formation of unique crystal structures that cannot be replicated on Earth. In addition to being rare, meteorite is also extremely difficult to work with. However, when sliced thin and treated with a special chemical process, it reveals the stunning crystalline patterns known as Widmanstätten figures. These rich formations reflect light beautifully, which is why meteorite has been increasingly used in high-end watchmaking dials in recent years.

Before that…
The two OMEGA Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite chronographs made their debut on January 14, 2025, ushering in the new year in spectacular fashion. This isn’t the first time Omega has used this extraterrestrial material in a dial. The unforgettable Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon Meteorite from 2016, with its grey tones and rose gold accents, remains one of the most stunning Speedmasters ever made.

Just last year, the Swiss brand launched a full Constellation collection in various case sizes (from 21 to 41 mm) and material combinations (steel, gold, or steel and gold), all featuring meteorite dials in a range of colors, including white, grey, gold, blue, purple, and green.

Double Moon
The two new “space-age” members of the Omega family are crafted from stainless steel, with a 43 mm case, and each features a different type of meteorite dial. Specifically, they use iron meteorite, which Omega has treated with either a black PVD coating or a galvanic grey finish.

The uniqueness of the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite chronographs goes beyond just the dial material. Thanks to the innovative Omega Calibre 9914, the lower part of the dial features a double moonphase display. This dual feature shows two moons, representing the lunar cycle as seen from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres – a first for the Speedmaster collection. The two domed cabochon moons are strikingly realistic and made from actual meteorite sourced from the Moon. As they rotate, they reveal the differing illumination seen from the two hemispheres. And perhaps the most impressive detail? The stars in the background are placed in the exact positions they appeared on the night Apollo 11 landed on the Moon in 1969 – as seen from Omega’s headquarters in Bienne, Switzerland.

The subdial at 3 o’clock functions as both a 60-minute and 12-hour chronograph counter, while the one at 9 o’clock displays small seconds and the date, indicated by a red anodized aluminum hand.
Both chronographs are fitted with stainless steel bracelets featuring polished and satin-finished links and Omega’s patented comfort-adjustment system for a perfect fit on the wrist.
