As you may have read in one of my previous articles, my relationship with the sport of sailing isn’t exactly a smooth one. Not because I don’t find it spectacular, thrilling, or physically demanding – quite the opposite. I would love nothing more than to be gliding across the Aegean, powered solely by the wind and the creaking rhythm of the sails. Unfortunately, I suffer from seasickness, so that dream is a bit incompatible with my physiology. My only contribution to the world of sailing, therefore, comes through the keyboard – by writing articles like this one. Today’s subject is two new timepieces by Panerai that once again seal the brand’s close connection to the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team, of which it has been an official partner since 2019. Since then, we’ve seen over a dozen models in the Luminor and Submersible collections, all dressed in the Italian team’s signature colors.

The Two Watches
Panerai’s passion for the sea is no secret – after all, the ocean is deeply embedded in the brand’s DNA. I should clarify here, so there’s no misunderstanding: the watches created in collaboration with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli are far more than simply existing models dressed up to match the sailing team’s aesthetics. They’re technically advanced timepieces, designed with the extreme demands of competitive sailing in mind. As such, they are built using innovative materials and cutting-edge technology.
Unlike previous Luna Rossa editions from past years – which played heavily with the team’s red, blue, and white color palette – these two new releases revolve around a more subdued grey theme, punctuated only by a few bold red accents. The models are the Luminor Luna Rossa and the limited edition Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio.

Luminor Luna Rossa PAM01653
This sturdy Luminor is defined by its minimalist and understated design. It features a 44mm stainless steel case with Panerai’s trademark crown-protecting bridge. The dial is a handsome matte grey, with just one splash of color—a small red hand on the running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock.

Inside ticks the manually-wound P.6000 mechanical calibre, which ensures increased stability and precision thanks to its improved architecture and stop-seconds function. It operates at 3Hz (21,600 vibrations/hour), incorporates an Incabloc shock protection system, and offers a 3-day power reserve.

Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio PAM01654
With a more technical character, this chronograph features a vertical clutch and a column wheel – hallmarks of high-end chronograph movements that guarantee smooth and precise operation for start, stop, and reset functions. This particular chronograph features a complex display system, with both the seconds and minutes shown via two central hands: a red hand for the seconds, and a white one with a red tip for the minutes. Only the elapsed hours are shown on a counter at 3 o’clock.

Unlike the “simpler” steel model above, the PAM01654 is crafted from lightweight and race-ready titanium –perfect for the demands of open-sea competition. The 44mm case is brushed titanium, while the bezel is polished titanium for added contrast.

The watch is powered by the automatic P.9100 calibre, a chronograph movement with flyback function. What does that mean? It means that with a single push, you can reset and restart the chronograph hands – unlike traditional chronographs, which require three separate steps.

The movement also features a tachymeter scale and delivers a 72-hour power reserve. This is a limited edition of 150 pieces.

Both new Luminor Luna Rossa models feature Arabic numerals and hour markers filled with white Super-LumiNova that glows green in the dark, ensuring excellent legibility even in pitch-black conditions. They’re water-resistant to 100 meters and come with dual-material grey straps marked by the distinctive red Luna Rossa stripe running down the center.
