I won’t lie—I was incredibly curious to see how Vacheron Constantin would mark its milestone anniversary this year. The moment I set foot inside the Palexpo exhibition center, home of Watches & Wonders 2025 in Geneva, I headed straight for the opulent Vacheron Constantin booth. There, front and center in a specially designed rotating display, the grand unveiling took place: the Les Cabinotiers Solaria—the most complicated wristwatch ever made. We’re talking 41 complications, 5 rare astronomical complications including a world first, an advanced Westminster minute repeater, 13 patent applications, 8 years of development, and an astonishing 1,521 components. That, in a nutshell, is this mechanical marvel.

The full name— VACHERON CONSTANTIN Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première, —was chosen to honor the brand’s 270th anniversary. It’s important to remember that Vacheron Constantin is the oldest watchmaker in continuous operation since its founding in 1755, when Jean-Marc Vacheron signed his first apprenticeship contract, launching a long and brilliant legacy. What better way to commemorate this than by unveiling the most complicated wristwatch ever created?

With its 41 high-complication functions—13 of which are subject to patent applications—this unique creation is the result of eight years of research and development. Just the assembly of its movement alone took an entire year. A true technical masterpiece, the Solaria incorporates five astronomical complications that have never before been combined in a single timepiece. The fact that 1,521 components were integrated into the compact dimensions of the manufacture Calibre 3655 (just 36mm in diameter and 10.96mm thick) is absolutely staggering.

All this mechanical wizardry is housed within a white gold case measuring 45mm in diameter and just 14.99mm thick. It bears repeating: the number of functions packed into this relatively wearable case size is unbelievable. But the size is not what truly makes it special—it’s the obsessive attention to design, which ensures absolute legibility of its multitude of complications.
Three Time Systems
To express different dimensions of time measurement, Calibre 3655 was conceived to display three types of time simultaneously: civil (standard), solar, and sidereal time—each with its own dedicated gear train.

Five Rare Astronomical Complications
The Les Cabinotiers Solaria brings together five highly sophisticated astronomical complications in an unprecedented configuration—among them, a world-first:
- The position of the Sun
- The altitude of the Sun above the horizon
- The culmination (zenith) of the Sun
- The declination of the Sun
- The temporal tracking of celestial bodies – a global premiere
In addition to these solar-based complications, one of the most complex functions is a newly developed split-seconds chronograph featuring a celestial display. This world-first mechanism calculates the exact time it will take for a specific constellation or star to reach the center of the observer’s field of vision.

All the Complications
It’s mind-boggling to imagine how the designers, engineers, watchmakers, and artisans of Vacheron Constantin managed to coordinate and execute a creation of this magnitude. Then again, they did have some “practice”—just a year ago they introduced the most complicated pocket watch ever built: the Les Cabinotiers The Berkley Grand Complication 57260, which boasts 57 complications. However, that was a very different beast—an enormous timepiece weighing nearly a kilogram, which clearly doesn’t fit in any pocket. With Solaria, the difficulty level was even higher because all of these incredible complications had to fit into a wristwatch—something actually wearable. No easy feat. And to give you a sense of just how mind-blowingly complex this mechanical miracle is, I’ve listed below all the complications it includes, grouped by category for easier reference.

We won’t go into further technical details—because we’d never finish. Honestly, deciphering how this watch works would require an entire instruction manual. What’s absolutely certain is that the VACHERON CONSTANTIN Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première is a true masterpiece of high watchmaking. Just as certain is the fact that this record will be incredibly difficult—if not impossible—for any other brand to surpass. History has shown that only Vacheron Constantin itself might be capable of such a feat, once again outdoing its own legacy. When? That remains to be seen. Perhaps for its 300th anniversary. Or maybe even sooner. Time will tell.
