WATCHES & WONDERS 2025 – 8 New Creations by Independent Watchmakers

Independent Watchmakers
Bold architecture and unconventional ways of displaying time shape the landscape of independent watchmaking, as revealed this April in Geneva.

How do independent watchmakers envision the passage of time? Out of the 60 watchmaking houses that exhibited at Watches & Wonders 2025 in Geneva, twenty were independent brands and creators. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the international auction scene, you may have noticed the growing demand for such timepieces. The rise of this once “niche” circle of creators is remarkable—once catering almost exclusively to a handful of seasoned, deep-pocketed collectors, independent watchmakers are now enjoying a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. Acquiring one of these watches is no small feat. We’re talking about creations made in tiny quantities—dozens or, at most, a few hundred per year—each one crafted in a small atelier with meticulous attention to detail. Naturally, they come at a high price. But what makes these watches so irresistibly appealing? Ask any collector, and they’ll tell you: there are no designs more elegant, no ideas more soulful, no executions more imaginative or better finished than those bearing the signature of an independent.

Independent Brands
.

In the world of watches, the independent scene resembles a kind of playground—a creative haven where experimentation, artistic freedom, and audacious design thrive. Within the broader universe of haute horlogerie, you’ll find independent makers who approach watchmaking with perspectives that are refreshingly unexpected, even poetic. And that’s precisely what makes their work so captivating. Looking back at what we saw in Geneva this year, I’ve selected eight models that stood out not only for their technical innovation but also for their visual impact. These are timepieces that deserve our attention. They’re listed below, in alphabetical order.

ARMIN STROM Dual Time GMT Resonance Manufacture Edition

W&W 2025 Independents

At the heart of this horological marvel lies the ARF22 movement, which has been entirely designed, developed, and manufactured in-house by Armin Strom. It features the brand’s signature dual-balance system, with two oscillators that synchronize their vibrations to ensure absolute precision in timekeeping. Above them sits a patented clutch spring, developed by the brand, which maintains the resonance effect even during wrist movement – ensuring the synchronized operation remains stable under real-life conditions. This is a milestone invention in the history of watchmaking, one that elevates the measurement of time into both an art form and a science. The Dual Time GMT Resonance Manufacture Edition features a 39mm stainless steel case and comes on an alligator leather strap. And since it’s a GMT model, the striking three-dimensional dial houses two independent sub-dials – one for each time zone – each with its own day/night indicator. This is a limited edition of just 50 pieces.

ARTYA GENÈVE Purity Wavy HMS Mirror

W&W 2025 Independents

ArtyA is a unique case in the world of watchmaking. Its founder, Yvan Arpa, is a former mathematician turned watchmaker who, for over three decades, has been creating timepieces that blend artistic eccentricity with mechanical originality – pieces unlike anything else on the market. Many of his creations are unique one-offs, while others belong to extremely limited collectible series. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Watches & Wonders, where he enthusiastically introduced me to the latest “child” of his… child. That’s because the case of the Purity Wavy HMS Mirror was designed by his son, Jérémie Arpa. This is a different kind of skeleton watch – spacious in its architectural layout, with exceptional hand-finishing (as always), and a mirror on the screw-down caseback that adds depth to the in-house movement while discreetly hiding the wearer’s skin from view. The case is made from satin-finished grade 5 titanium, with a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of 13mm. The Purity STH HMS movement is hand-wound and features two barrels, providing a 72-hour power reserve.

CYRUS Dominion GMT Gold

Independent Watchmakers

When you first lay eyes on this watch, you’re struck by its beautifully constructed skeleton dial with three hands. But upon closer inspection, you realize it conceals a highly practical function: a second time zone, indicated by a white central GMT hand that points to a grey inner ring with a 24-hour scale. What may not be immediately apparent, however, is that this second time zone display is retrograde. In other words, once the GMT hand completes its 24-hour journey, it snaps back instantly to its starting position to begin a new cycle. So we’re not talking about a simple GMT function here, but rather a mechanism of high complexity. The calibre CYR708 is automatic, offers a 55-hour power reserve, and was developed in-house by one of the most celebrated master watchmakers of our time, Jean-François Mojon. The CYRUS Dominion GMT Gold features a 42mm case made of 5N rose gold, with a thickness of 16.73mm, titanium inserts on the sides, and two rose gold crowns—one on each side—for setting the time zones. Limited to 25 pieces.

FERDINAND BERTHOUD Chronomètre FB 3SPC.3

Independent Watchmakers

Ferdinand Berthoud is a personal endeavor of Chopard’s Co-President, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, who, a decade ago, set out to revive the legacy of the eponymous Swiss watchmaking inventor through a brand that remains rooted in traditional horology while reinterpreting it with a fresher perspective and a more contemporary design language. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, the iconic FB 3SPC collection—known for its cylindrical balance spring—has been enriched with an extremely limited edition in platinum, which can also be custom-set with gemstones (although, in my view, that would be entirely unnecessary). Thanks to the distinctive three-dimensional architecture of the FB 3SPC.3 model—with the mainplate positioned at the center of the movement and the bridges arranged around it—the hand-wound Calibre FB-SPC is fully visible both from the caseback and the dial side. The FB 3SPC.3 features a salmon-pink sandblasted movement surface, an inner bezel and dial crafted from bronze with a velvety silver-toned finish, and 18K gold hands with a blue PVD coating. In addition to central hour and minute hands and a small seconds subdial, it also includes a power reserve indicator at 2 o’clock. A stunning and deeply desirable piece—just like the two other new versions added to the FB 3 collection this year, featuring rose gold or black PVD coatings, all released in strictly limited runs of just 20 pieces each.

GENUS GNS2 Infinity Blue

Independent Watchmakers

Genus has captivated us with its original way of depicting the passage of time. The new GNS2 Infinity Blue transforms time into a living spectacle of perpetual motion. Instead of conventional hands, it uses a patented system of arrows: three hour arrows rotate around the periphery of the dial, while another three follow a path that forms the number “8” — symbolizing infinity, eternal motion — and indicate the minutes. The watch’s case is made of grade 5 titanium, making it both lightweight and robust, and it encases a striking blue dial reminiscent of a mysterious night sky. This deep hue contrasts beautifully with the golden crescent-shaped surfaces, whose texture is as fine as grains of sand. Every component is finished by hand, using the most rigorous traditional techniques of haute horlogerie. And the groundbreaking movement — designed and manufactured in-house by Genus — is hand-wound, offers a 50-hour power reserve, and is immaculately finished, as befits a timepiece of this caliber.

HYT S1 Beadblasted Titanium Red

Independent Watchmakers

With its signature turbines and the distinctive hydro-mechanical technology that has made HYT famous, this new watch is nothing short of breathtaking—literally. It’s not for everyone, but even those who favor more traditional timepieces can’t help but bow to its presence. Bold, futuristic, and spectacular, this new creation displays the hours via a transparent capillary tube made of borosilicate glass running around the edge of the dial. Inside it are two immiscible liquids—one red and one clear—with different densities that prevent them from mixing. Through the action of two turbines and an exceptionally complex mechanical system, the red liquid advances to indicate the passing hours, and once it reaches the end of the scale, it instantly snaps back to the starting point in retrograde fashion. As for the minutes, a single central hand does the job. The watch is crafted from titanium and finished with a bead-blasted texture—a technique similar to sandblasting, but using tiny spherical beads, giving it that uniquely distinctive appearance.

SPEAKE MARIN Piccadilly Résilience Gold

Independent Watchmakers

And now, to catch our breath a little, here comes a model that’s quieter in both design and mechanical complexity, but one that wins you over through its simplicity and unparalleled elegance. It’s one of the latest creations from the independent and consistently fascinating Speake Marin. Its dial is made of white Grand Feu enamel. To be precise, it’s composed of five layers of white enamel, giving it that beautiful porcelain-like appearance. The case of the Résilience Gold has a classic 38mm diameter and is crafted from 18K red gold. Yet the overall aesthetic of the watch is anything but traditional. Perhaps it’s the oversized yet delicate black stamped Roman numerals marking the hours. Or the railway-style minute track in a vivid shade of blue. Or maybe it’s the unusually shaped blued steel hands — the hour hand, notably, is heart-shaped! There’s also the off-center small seconds subdial, positioned right at the edge of the dial. Even beneath the brand’s logo, there’s a single blue screw — placed there purely for aesthetic reasons. Inside beats an in-house automatic movement with a tungsten micro-rotor, offering a power reserve of 52 hours.

TRILOBE Une Folle Journée Rhodium-plated Green

Independent Watchmakers

Last but not least, we have the French brand Trilobe – one of my absolute favorites, as it never fails to surprise with its ingenious and daring creations. What we have here is a redesigned version of the model Une Folle Journée – which translates to A Crazy Day. If you’ve been following the watch world, this distinctive way of displaying time has surely stayed with you. This watch echoes Trilobe’s earliest creations. With its rotating and floating concentric rings, the collection raises the bar of both complexity and aesthetics even higher, masterfully blending traditional haute horlogerie with contemporary design. The concept is brilliantly simple: three rings rotate, each carrying with it a time indication – the largest shows the hours, the middle one the minutes, and the smallest the seconds. This particular version features a 40.5mm titanium case, and the rings are rhodium-plated in a luminous green hue that perfectly matches the alligator leather strap in the same vibrant color.
